Why we Need Adventure – And How to Create It

writers 0

In order to break up the monotony of everyday life, we all need to get away from it all every now and then to avoid the boredom of the daily grind. A bit of adventure in our lives stimulates our hearts and minds and we soon find ourselves on the search for the next one. I know that we would all like to be on another adventure every day, but in reality, that is really not feasible. Therefore, you have to seize the opportunity when you come across it and make the most of it.

The good thing is that it is easy to add a bit of excitement into your day and sometimes where and when you least expect it. I have learned to embrace my spirit of adventure and it has led me on many a wondrous journey. More than a few years ago, I became fascinated with road-tripping’ in the same vein as Jack Kerouac and decided to figure out how to go about incorporating that into my own life. Only marginally daunted, I hopped on a plane to Costa Rica with little more than a guidebook and a backpack with just the bare essentials.

There were no reservations, no plans, and I spoke hardly a word of Spanish to converse with the locals. That same year, I went to Canada on a whim and ended up picking fruit in the Okanagan Valley with a friend. Not only were these spur of the moment adventures noteworthy, but they truly changed my life and I live for this feeling now. You truly cannot compare it to anything else in the world. Those are not the only ways that you can get a sense of adventure as there are quite a few more that I advise for making life as exciting as possible.

Following Your Feet

When you find yourself unsure, allow your feet to guide the way. Going on a walk in and of itself can be a great way to discover new parks, streets, and gain a sense of adventure. Walk with intention and you will find that your body will naturally tell you where to go. I have discovered so many new things just in my neighborhood simply by getting up and going on a walk down new roads I’ve never seen. It never ceases to amaze me all of the beauty that surrounds me here in the city and every week I am inspired anew.

Taking Mini-Trips

Of course, longer trips are better, but sometimes you don’t have the time and you have to improvise, which is where the art of the mini-trip comes into play. Getting out of your city and getting away – even if for a day – can add an element of excitement and adventure that residing in the city cannot provide. There are so many islands near me in Vancouver that truly take me to another realm of both my mind and spirit and it is wondrous to realize that these places are not even an hour from my house. It really makes you stop for a moment and rejoice in the smaller things in life.

Going to Work a Different Way

Normally, we are all rushing to work, but on those days when we are not, taking a few extra minutes to take a new path can be more relaxing than you bargained for. You never know what can await you just around the corner and it is a great time to be at one with your inner thoughts.

Shopping Somewhere New

We all have those grocery and department stores that we religiously go to, but I have found that by changing my schedule a bit, I can be rejuvenated and even sometimes find a bargain I would never have found otherwise. Some of these mini-marts and mom & pop stores have opened up an array of options I’d never considered before and I’m better because of it.
